In a recent Finance & Commerce feature, Ancoats founder David Wood shared insights into his construction journey and the company’s growth since its founding in 2020.
Wood, who comes from a construction family background, revealed how his early exposure to the industry shaped his career path. After earning a construction engineering degree and spending 10 years at large construction firm, he identified an opportunity in the Minneapolis market to better serve mid-size projects ranging from $5-25 million.
The company name “Ancoats” has family significance, named after the Manchester, England district where Wood’s grandparents and great-grandparents lived—a small area that became influential during the Industrial Revolution through manufacturing innovations.
Today, Ancoats has completed over 50 projects, with approximately 80% in corporate, hospitality, and life sciences sectors. Notable clients include Sick Inc.’s North American headquarters in Bloomington (combined value of about $85 million), Boston Scientific, and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota.
Looking forward, Wood highlighted sustainability as a growing focus area, with increasing client interest in environmentally responsible construction and decarbonization of existing assets.
